Angry reactions have met Harambee Stars’ false start to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations campaign after losing 1-0 away to lowly ranked Guinea Bissau on Saturday.

With the team expected to arrive at 5am this morning, the ball of contention will be the divided leadership at Football Kenya Limited (FKL) and wrangles on the technical bench.

The loss is a blow to Stars, who are seeking to feature at the continental showpiece after more than six years of absence, and Kenya must win all their remaining five matches to be certain of qualifying for the 2012 Cup of Nations to be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon and 2013 event in Libya.

Kenya Football Federation (KFF) chairman Sam Nyamweya called for the immediate disbandment of FKL, the company running local football, and urged the new Minister of Sports Paul Otuoma to appoint Harambee Stars Management Board to take care of the national team during their remaining qualifiers.

Travel Problems

Poor preparations and travel problems affected Stars’ away match to Guinea Bissau, and could have led to the shock defeat against a team ranked 188 by Fifa. After departing late from Nairobi, it is said the team arrived in Bissau at 1am on the day of the match and the harsh weather conditions of the coastal city and jet lag could have taken toll on the players.

Guinea Bissau prolonged Kenya’s hangover on away matches with a shock 1-0 away win, courtesy of a 76th minutes Cicero Semedi goal.

"We honestly can’t blame the players because we all know where the problem lies. We are calling on FKL officials to disband the company as well as the technical bench because they have clearly failed to run the team. If they don’t then the Government should move fast and disband the body," Nyamweya said yesterday.

He added: "Sports Minister Otuoma should also appoint Harambee Stars Management Board to take care of the team as plans for elections continue."

Next level

"Going down to a politically unstable country is an embarrassment to Kenya, we are also becoming a disgrace to the region because Tanzania held Algeria 1-1 away, Sudan beat Congo 2-0 and Uganda beat Angola 3-0 and yet Kenya cannot win," Nyamweya said.

KFF Secretary General Lodvick Aduda said Twahir Muhidin could not take Kenya to the next level and a new coach should be named before the next qualifiery against Uganda on October 10.

"If Algeria’s coach Rabah Saadane can resign for drawing with Tanzania, despite taking the Desert Foxes to the World Cup after 24 years absence, who is Muhidin not to step aside, because he failed in the last campaign, failed in the CHAN competition and now this.

He said: "I read reports from the leader of delegation Hussein Swaleh that humidity in Bissau also took its toll on the players, so I wonder why the team had to camp at the leafy Karen area and they were well aware of the conditions in Bissau."

A group of fans led by Kenya Football Fans Association vice-chairman Okumu Osoti have also demanded that the technical bench be disbanded or they take to the streets to protest Harambee Stars’ poor perfromance.

Meanwhile, Kenya Referees Association secretary general GMT Ottieno has condemned the ugly scenes witnessed during Saturday’s FKL Cup match between AFC Leopards and Thika United, where Thika United players roughed up referee John Ngururi at Nyayo Stadium.

"This is primitive and it is totally unaccepted. Thika is big team that plays top flight football and they should act as role models to other teams and by doing what they did

FKL should take stiff disciplinary action against them. The club’s management should also discipline the players, who would be found guilty of the offence," said Ottieno.
